Anthony Bennett to UNLV ? Amile Jefferson a priority now?

  • Rating: 0 after 1 vote

According to Matt Jones below:

For a variety of reasons that I will expound on later today on the blog, I now believe Anthony Bennett will eventually pick UNLV

Is Amile Jefferson to Kentucky likely now?

The kid from Virginia Tech (Montrezl Harrell) is staying put so he is not an option.

Look, Matt Jones is just repeating what a national recruiting "expert" said yesterday on Twitter.  Jones doesn't have any original information to share on this.  Remember, the "experts" - both the national experts AND SaveUK - all said that Florida was the clear leader.  Remember that?  Then Bradley Beal declared for the NBA draft and now we're behind UNLV and Oregon?

Come on, they don't know.  When it comes to Anthony's recruiting, I don't think we will know where he's going until he actually announces... and not a moment before.

Bennett's grades, his relationship to Khem Birch, his wanting to be the #1 offensive option, and other factors are all factors in this and all guesses are just that.

I don't always buy into Matt Jones' info, but it seems like a lot of things are making it less likely that Bennett will end up at UK.  While he hints at "character issues," it seems like the biggest stumbling block for him might be his grades.  If he can't academically qualify, then it seems pretty fruitless to keep pursuing the kid.  I know he's the cat's meow right now, but if he's not going to be a good fit, then I (as a fan) am ready to move on.

As for UK, we shall see.

Folks close to AB told Adam Zagoria that Bennett wants to be the featured player on whatever team he ends up on. Given the guys we have, that can't happen at UK. That is the reason I don't expect him in Lexington.

Amen Jim, Coach looks for team players and players that can make the grade. If they want to be a feature they need to find another team.    I agree 110 %  with your comment.

He seemed like a nice kid. I thought it was just academic eligibility issues but demanding center stage ..wow .. definitely not Cal's type of player if that is true.

Does this clear the way for Amile Jefferson to UK then?

Was AB's potential commitment to UK delaying Amile's decision?

I would think that Amile has been waiting to see if there was a scholly available to him if Bennett passed.  We could really use Bennett.  We need some bulk and he would fill the bill.  Bennett and Jeffereson are such different players.  Bennett may be having trouble with his grades too and that would be a BIG issue.

Well I guess Cadiz answered that question.  Bennett is not making a very good career choice.  I bet he stays at home and is at least a two or three yr player

I guess Bennett was uninformed about the nice history of Canadian players at UK...

Jim, I'm really shocked about this, I don't know about you, but really shocked.  UNLV and Oregon get no coverage and he wants to be "the man."  I've not see him play a game where he was"the man" and he thinks he is going to come in to college and score 25 points a game.  He can't do that at UNLV or Oregon and since UNLV has upperclassmen coming back, they're not going to just lie down and let him take all the shots.  Cal has a very unique system, that allows each player to contribute and grow into a pro for the long haul.

I totally agree, but the minute his camp let it out that he wanted to be the star of the team, I figured it was over. He's a unique, somewhat undersized PF who will do well if coached well, but he would not have outshined Noel, Poythress, Goodwin, or perhaps even a stronger, quicker Wiltjer.

He wanted to play with Beal, but that rug got pulled out from underneath him. Khem Birch is a buddy (at UNLV) and our incoming freshmen were not. Given his comfort in Vegas, his buddy on the team, and possible grade issues, UNLV seems like his best fit. Oregon has strong Nike support and a real need for a stud like Bennett, so if he lands there it won't be a huge shock now that we know more about what he's looking for.

Cal might have coached him into a one-and-done, but I seriously doubt that will happen at UNLV or Oregon.

Jim, Aligned, Krystal, etc......where do we go from here

I have no idea if we'll get him or not, but Jefferson has to be the target now. Some have mentioned other names if Amile goes elsewhere, but let's hope he swallows his pride and jumps at the chance to play for Cal and play alongside some guys that will make his life easier. Cross your fingers.
