Guilt by Reputation?: Cal and Cousins on Fouls

  • Rating: No Rating
John Calipari voiced his displeasure with the referees going to the replay monitor on Saturday to determine if DeMarcus Cousins committed a flagrant foul on a rebound in the first half. Cousins developed a reputation of being foul prone and physical early in the season, but Coach Calipari is taking exception to how closely Cousins' play is being watched in SEC play.

Cousins should learn to control his temper which he has done.

Refs need to be watching for things opponents might do to get in his head. If it is a foul then they should call it a foul.

Cousins gets fouled nearly every time he has the ball, but his size and strength make it hard for a ref to make the call. I can understand his frustation, he gets mugged on the offensive side then gets called for ticky tack bs on the defensive side.

The problem compounded itself earlier in the season with the attention his "foul trouble" and "attitude" was getting. The refs are now looking to blow the whistle on Cousins. I don't see this issue changing until the NCAA tournament. SEC refs are watching him like a hawk, he has no room for error.

I think you nailed it! I'd be frustrated too if I were getting mugged with no call AND then I got nailed for a petty/non-existent foul.

I also think the refs look to create more fouls when Cuz is involved. He's got a target on his head and it's painstakingly obvious...

A foul is a foul is a foul. Referees need to call the game and if a foul is committed it needs to be called. It should not matter who the player is, what their attitude may be or how big they are. I'm very proud of the progress Cuz has made in learning to control his temper. He does need to control himself but he deserves to be treated fairly by the referees. I seem to recall a certain other rather large SEC player that was fouled often without the fouls being called. His name was Shaq. I guess the thing that I hate most about SEC basketball is the officiating or lack of it. I would just like for the games to be called fairly and let the chips fall where they may. Go Cats!

It just irritates the heck out of me in regards to the anti-Boogie bias. Other big men throw elbows and the monitor is never checked... why should Boogie always have the monitor checked???

I have to agree with you, Waitin'! They are treating him unfairly. That monitor-checking is getting to be riduculous IMO. Hopefully when they are checking the monitor (even though they can't change the call) they are also seeing what's really going on. In nearly every single re-play that I've seen, Cuz is being hit on the head; pushed in the back or his jersey is in somebody's fist and sometimes all three happen. It's ludicrous that the reason the monitor is being consulted is to see what CUZ has done. It's totally unfair and I don't care what kind of reputation someone has, the game should be called fairly. After this season is over, I think I'll tackle the SEC officiating office about this problem. Not now. Too many other important things going on at present. Let's hope we'll make it through our conference without anything happening that actually changes the outcome of a game. Once we reach the NCAA's I'll be surprised if the officiating is this unfair to our big boy Cuz. Go Cuz! Go Cats!
