I grew up in South Florida. I vividly remember staying up late to watch George press the button. He was years ahead of his time and I am sure he will be missed by many in sports. Sorry to hear this Greg. I did not know he was sick.

Thanks Brian. George was a great boss and a lot of fun to work for as many of had said he was the SportsCenter before SportsCenter. He also helped hundreds take their careers to a new level. PTI actually was launched after Wilbon and Kornheiser got their television start working on two shows that George started "The Redskins Report" and "Full Court Press" in Washington. NBC Nightly News did a nice look back at George's career.

The Sports Machine was such a great show for a young kid to watch back when there were only 3 choices or maybe 2 to 3 extra independent choices if a person lived in a big city. It gave highlights of all the games throughout the country and not just the local sports. As even ESPN has acknowledged, it was Sportscenter before there was an ESPN. George Michael will be missed.

Did he use to do Nascar races? When I saw his picture that is what I remember.

He didn't actually announce Nascar races but he was big into Nascar. He used to do our show live from Daytona each year.
