Krystal Ball: The Bounce Back Edition

Hello everyone and welcomed back to a delayed version of TKB...a lot going on at my "real job" mostly concerning Winter Armageddon 2010: The Sequel.

Last week was a pretty good one...going 5-1 again for the week. I should have been 6-0 but changed my mind on the Alabama- Mississippi State game and lost. A few random thoughts...

With the win on Tuesday, South Carolina now ties Mississippi State for the longest current SEC win streak against Kentucky at 3.

Another stat… Continue

Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down--UK vs. South Carolina

Kentucky traveled to South Carolina Tuesday as the only undefeated team in the nation and as the new number one team in the nation, but they left with a one in the loss column as the Gamecocks beat the Cats 68-62.

Thumbs Up

DeMarcus Cousins- Cousins has clearly become the go to guy on this team. He scored four early points for Kentucky on beautiful baseline spin moves. He finished the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds and had the most impact on this… Continue

Jamius Gunsby

Save asked me about Gunsby tonight, so I did a little more digging. Originally Florida was thought to be the leader for Gunsby after he had a fantastic summer camp down in Gainesville. Florida's spread offense would be the ideal fit for a QB of Gunsby's style which lends itself more to a spread offense than a pro-style game like Kentucky plays. Kentucky offered a scholarship shortly thereafter, and it is assumed that Gunsby would be moved to WR for UK. Kentucky's offense favors taller receivers… Continue

Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down--UK vs. Arkansas

Kentucky entered Saturday's match-up against Arkansas looking to take over the top spot in the polls as the only undefeated team left in the country. After the most complete game of the season, the Cats left no doubt who the best team is, moving to 19-0 with a 101-70 victory over the Razorbacks.

Thumbs Up

Quick Start- One worry going into this game could have been a slow start since the Cats had a week off after winning at Auburn. That clearly wasn't… Continue

Krystal Ball: Beat An "Unforgettable:" Go To Number 1 In The Nation

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of The Krystal Ball. Last week I tried out doing a basketball-themed blog and it seems to go pretty well, so I thought what the heck, let's do it again.

The Ol' Ball went 5-1 last week, losing the Vandy-South Carolina game. What does this weekend hold, time to take a look.

Arkansas at Kentucky--- (4:00--WKYT- SEC Network) As Save and others have told you, this isn't the same Razorback team from earlier in the… Continue

John Calpari's second ranked Wildcats survived another scare down on the friendly plains of Auburn, Alabama last Saturday winning 72-67 and remain undefeated at 18-0, but it's been a shaky affair the last few games with the fingernails of Big Blue Nation starting to wear extremely thin and we're still six weeks away from the post… Continue

Football Recruiting and Rankings: The In's and Out's

This is a response to those fans who are upset with the UK football classes’ low rank so near to signing day.

With Louisville's recent verbals, there have been some anxious UK fans concerned about Kentucky’s lack of high profile, big star guys. Yes, Louisville is in fact pulling in higher ranked recruits. Should you worry? NO you should not. The thing many people do not realize is that the difference between a 2* WR and a 4* WR is really not that much. Donnie Avery and Kennan Burton… Continue

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down: Auburn

Kentucky outlasted Auburn 72-67 to remain undefeated and move to 18-0 on the season, though the Tigers gave the 'Cats all they wanted and then some on Saturday afternoon.

Thumbs Up

DeMarcus Cousins- The Alabama native led the way once again for the young Wildcats, recording another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds (5 on the offensive glass) in 30 minutes of action. Cousins also added 4 blocks to his box score, including a critical stop late… Continue

Catching Up On A Few Things and Some Predictions Too...

Hello everyone and welcome back to my first Basketball Edition of The Krystal Ball for the new year. I had an SEC Preview that was going to go up last week, but between all the madness down in Knoxville and dealing with "Winter Armageddon 2010" at my real job, it got pushed aside.

For the record here were my SEC Predictions...

East

Kentucky 14-2 (Losses at either USC, Vandy or Miss. State)

Tennessee 11-5

Vanderbilt 10-6

Fan Blog - Why no discussion on the spanking the baby blue got last night?

North Carolina got a royal butt blistering last night, 19 point defeat. I don't know how many watched the game, but Ole' Roy Boy had his panties in a wad. They looked the whole game like they did in the first half against us. I really believe this team is soft, especially on the road. Clemson was soooo physical with them and they really backed down. If they continue playing like they did last night, it may be next season before they break 2000 wins. Baby blue has not a clue, bu tonly cries boo… Continue

Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down--UK vs. Florida

Kentucky took to the road in the SEC for the first time this season and survived a sluggish start and a late Florida run to knock off the Gators 89-77 in Gainesville.

Thumbs Up

Calm Under Fire- The young guys continue to impress me with their calm approach to the game. When nothing was falling through the hoop and Florida was starting to pull away in the first ten minutes, they could have started rushing shots and forcing the issue, but I didn't see… Continue

DeAndre is De-spark

A couple of weeks ago, I'm not so sure anyone thought that DeAndre Liggins was going to be able to provide any help to this UK basketball team. However, Deandre Liggins was THE ONLY player who did anything off the bench in Kentucky's win over Georgia. He was the difference in the game. He came off the bench to score 6 points, get 3 steals, grab 1 rebound, and take a charge in only 14 minutes of play. He played great, hard-nosed defense, and the tough lay up that he made came at a crucial time… Continue

Never, never, never, never give up!

15 - 0! Who would have dared to dream such a dream even as recently as a year ago? It just goes to show that most things have a way of working out. How is it that they work out though? Do problems just magically disappear? Do skills just automatically appear with no effort? We all know that in order to excel in any aspect of life it takes effort -- it takes work -- it takes time. As the entire country now knows, our basketball program is back in the forefront once again. That didn't… Continue

Round Won: Cal's Cats Outslug Pitino's Cards

For several years since its renewal in 1983-84 the UK-UL basketball game has been labeled each year with two descriptions or titles as the annual "Dream Game" or "Battle of the Bluegrass".

You can definitely place last Saturday's game at Rupp Arena under the "Battle of the Bluegrass" category.

It simply was a backyard… Continue

Goodbye Coach Brooks

The end of an era was finalized today. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a little bit emotional when I heard coach Brooks saying it was officially over and he was retiring, but it does give us an opportunity to look back and see where Kentucky is now comparing to where we were in 2003.

When Guy Morris bolted for the greener pastures of Baylor University (chuckle) after his 7-5 2002 campaign, the UK faithful were dropped into disarray. We… Continue
