Fan Breakdown: Safeties

During the 2010 season, Kentucky suffered from less than stellar safety play on a weekly basis. The Wildcats started Mychal Bailey and Winston Guy in the defensive backfield, and while both players are talented, both made their share of mistakes. A change in scheme, some position changes, and the addition of a couple of exciting freshmen should give the safeties a new look this fall.

#21 Winston Guy / ‘Sam’ Linebacker / SR / 6’1 – 216 /… Continue

2011 Fan Breakdown: Tight Ends

Possibly the biggest fan gripe over the past few years, the tight end production at Kentucky has never been the same since Jacob Tamme moved on to catch passes from Peyton Manning. The Wildcats seem to grab a solid player or two in every recruiting class, but there hasn’t been a single guy that could step up and claim the position as his own for several seasons. The graduation of Moncell Allen has left the Wildcats without a clear-cut starting fullback on the roster, and with an abundance of… Continue

The 2011 Post-Season Superlatives

The 2010 season is finally over and it's time for the annual semi-official KSN post-season superlatives.  Now you may not remember the ASOKSNPSS awards from last year, so if you need a refresher, you can click HERE.  There are some repeat award winners and some new faces on the list this season as well.  Remember that the selection comittee took a long time reviewing nominations and…

Kentucky's 2011 football recruiting class

This is a combination of the three primary databases used to evaluate prospects.  I would have liked to add 24/7 sports to this as well, but they have only evaluated a couple of Kentucky's current verbals at this time.  The 40-yard dash times are based on times recorded at combines or an estimate based on…

Upon Further Review: Tennessee

It’s honestly kind of stupid to get so upset about a sporting event, but the Tennessee game has left me completely crushed. For yet another year, I have to go to bed each night knowing that my favorite team has been completely dominated for my entire lifetime and that there might not be an end in sight. If there was ever a year to beat Tennessee, it would have to be this one. The Vols are staring a quarterback that was at his prom last… Continue

Upon Further Review: Vanderbilt

Senior day has come and gone and we fans have seen the last game in Commonwealth stadium for the 2010 season. I’ve taken a few weeks off of the “Upon further review” series of posts due to some new responsibilities at the job I actually get paid for, but I’m back to recap the Vandy game.

Mike Hartline had a pretty decent game this week. It’s easy to look at his performance and say he was down, which is true based on the performances he… Continue

Upon Further Review: Georgia

The Wildcats had a great opportunity to take a step forward and take a stake in the race for the SEC east on Saturday. Unfortunately the Bulldogs had other plans and beat Kentucky by a score of 44 to 31 in a game that wasn’t really all that close. I would like to have a more complete breakdown of the game for you, but it was not on T.V in my town and I wasn’t able to record it for a good analysis. Time Warner sucks.

Outside of the interception in the endzone, Hartline played a great… Continue

Upon Further Review: South Carolina

Let me tell ya, re-watching the game two or three times and writing up these reviews is a lot more fun after a big win than it is after a crushing loss. I though the team came out flat and rebounded nicely in the second half to show some real grit in knocking off South Carolina. The offense was fantastic and the defense played as well as it has this season.

Offensively, the Gamecocks were smothering the run so Kentucky went… Continue

Upon Further Review: Auburn

I really don’t know what to say this week. On one hand, I’ve got so much on my mind after the game, but on the other hand, I’m almost speechless.

So I guess all the folks that hated on Mike Hartline before the season are going to have to officially accept that they were wrong. The Wildcat offense was able to move the ball against Auburn at will and Mike did a great job of not making any mistakes. People like to complain when the guy… Continue

Upon Further Review: Ole Miss

This weeks’ review is going to be a short one because I really don’t have that much to say after the loss to Mississippi.

Mike Hartline had a pretty good game overall. The interception was a costly one, but he piled up 300 passing yards and made some nice throws. He gets a lot of the blame when Kentucky doesn’t do well, and I know a lot of people think I’m a Hartline apologist, but the guy is doing a better job than a lot of… Continue

Upon Further Review: Florida

I want to start of this week’s review by telling everyone to relax. Kentucky had an awful game, but step back and look at the big picture here. The Wildcats went into the Swamp and played the #9 team in the country. Kentucky was not supposed to win the game. No one circled this contest as a sure win in August. Very few people circles Florida as a possible win in August. So let’s summarize everything here. Kentucky went to play the #9… Continue

Upon Further Review: Akron

Another week, another win. The Wildcats throttled the Zips of Akron 47-10 on Saturday and finished up their last non-conference game before a tough SEC slate. Kentucky looked great at times, and less than great at others, and I’ve got my post-game breakdown finalized for this week.

For the third straight contest, Hartline comes out and has a hell of a game. Granted Akron isn’t exactly going to be vying for the BCS championship, but… Continue

Upon Further Review: Western Kentucky

With Saturday's game come and gone, it's time for my weekly recap of the game. This one pitted Kentucky against their second in-state opponent in a row, although this time it was a WKU team in the midst of a 21 game losing streak. There were a couple of bright spots for Kentucky, but there were also a few hiccups as well.

Once again, Hartline had a great game. His final line was 16 for 20, throwing for 213 yards, 3 touchdowns, and… Continue

Upon Further Review: Louisville

In case you're new to the site, "Upon Further Review" is a postgame synopsis of the Kentucky game that I write each week. It's usually informative, sometimes funny, and typically way too long. The grammar may be bad, there will probably be misspellings, and I also make up words. I write like I talk, so try to read it like a guy is talking this to you because I didn't get high grades in english, writing, or typing for that matter. To be clear, I'm not actually Dermontti Dawson but I did see… Continue

Fan Breakdown: Defensive Line

Any old football documentary will tell you that the heart and soul of a football team is located along the trenches. The glitz and glamour of scoring touchdowns and being on magazine covers is usually reserved for the offensive "skill" position players. On defense, several athletes that have eventually made big time splashes in college (and later in the pros) have magnified the importance of solid defensive line play. Guys like Dwight Freeney,… Continue

Know your enemy: Mopeds

The moped is now on the enemy list for Kentucky fans after Friday's news that star tailback Derrick Locke has sustained a slight fracture in his arm after an moped accident. The injury is not severe enough to warrant surgery, and Locke is expected to be 100% by the September 4th Louisville game. This is good news because, while they have immense talent and potential, Locke's backup options are untested in sophomore Donald Russell and…

Football's Spring Storylines

With basketball season in full swing it’s easy to forget that football teams are gearing up or spring practices and some are even already underway around the country. Kentucky’s spring practices will start on March 31st, but there are already plenty of story lines to follow for UK fans.…

Some New Names to Know

Heading into spring practice, the roster will start to be shaken up soon. Everyone knows Randall Cobb, Winston Guy, Derrick Locke and the other high profile players. With so much talent from the 2009 class coming in off of their redshirt seasons, there are several new names to remember that you may not be familiar with. I’ll take a look at one newcomer from each position group that should have an impact on the Depth chart in…

Shifting Football Recruiting Focus for 2011

Kentucky just wrapped up the 2010 recruiting class, and focus now shifts to 2011. When Joker took over the program in January, he said recruiting would take on a new level of importance. He and his current staff have already hosted several players in the upcoming class and have received two commitments already. With only twelve scholarship seniors on the roster, scholarship offers will be at more of a premium than in years past. There is… Continue

Kentucky's 2010 Football Recruiting Class

Mychal Bailey DB 6'0 185 LaGrange, Ga. (JUCO)

Bailey continues the LaGrange pipeline Kentucky has built. He will come in as a junior out of JUCO with three years of eligibility to play two. Bailey looks to fit in as a Cornerback or Safety at Kentucky and while he weighs in at less than 200 pounds, he packs quite a punch. Kentucky is unlikely to use a redshirt on him, and he has the tools to provide the most “instant impact” play-making ability of anyone UK will bring into… Continue
