CAN'T there be an answer?

I'm already getting really tired of "can't" with this UK basketball team.

They can't win on an opponent's home court.

They can't win close games.

They can't win with just six players.

They can't win with no bench.

They can't win with three freshmen leading the way.

They can't win…

Rupp Arena Needs An Attitude Check

When Rupp Arena is rocking, there is no better place in the country to watch a college basketball game.   When the crowd is excited and on their feet, you can sometimes literally feel Rupp Arena shake.   I love going to Rupp when Kentucky is playing a big game.  You can feel the "juice" in the air.

But.......I really feel like the folks who are responsible for the game day promotions at a UK basketball game at Rupp Arena are really "dropping the ball"…

Superior Spurrier No More!!

Where is Devan Downey now?

What a difference a week makes.

What a difference a couple of seconds can make.

As much as UK football fans had to deal with heartache in the last-second loss to Auburn one week ago, their hearts are filled with joy and praise following the last-second win over South Carolina.

Our hearts went out to the players and coaches after losing to Auburn. The Cats deserve this win over South Carolina. They deserve this feeling. The… Continue

Rebel Yell!

I remember when I was an underclassmen in high school, and I had a major crush on this one senior girl. She seemed to have everything I wanted. I thought she would make me happy. I finally convinced her to go out with me a time or two. Big mistake! She was nothing like I expected.

I've got that same feeling now.

I was falling for this UK football team, and now I think I might be as disappointed as I was many years ago. I thought this UK football team was going to do… Continue

Swamped Again

Florida is just better than Kentucky.

So much for thinking that Florida's offense was struggling. So much for thinking that maybe this was the season that Kentucky was going to beat Florida. So much for thinking that Florida was a little down this year.

Florida is just better than Kentucky.

Florida has better players than Kentucky. Florida has faster players than Kentucky. Florida has stronger players than Kentucky.

Florida is just better than… Continue

Locked and Loaded

UK running back Derrick Locke epitomizes everything I like and everything I dislike about high profile college athletes.

Sometimes I don't like some of the things that Locke does. Sometimes I don't like some of the things that he says, and sometimes I don't like the way he acts.

When he walked off the football field in the closing minutes of the Cats Music City Bowl loss to Clemson last December, I thought that was a gutless, classless, selfish act. It made him look bad.… Continue

Turn on your "Hart-light"

I wasn't surprised that Mike Hartline won the starting quarterback job with Kentucky, but I was disappointed that Morgan Newton didn't improve enough during the off season to beat Hartline out for the job.

After the Cats win over Louisville, I now see why Hartline won the job.

I think this was one of Hartline's best performances as UK's quarterback. I think his performance last year against South Carolina down at Columbia before he got hurt was his best game. Today may… Continue

One for the Ages!

First of all, I don't want to hear a Mississippi State fan complain that Kentucky had to hit a lucky shot to beat the Bulldogs because I remember a couple of years ago in the SEC tournament when State's Jamont Gordon hit a 3 from his fanny to help beat the Cats. Sometimes turn-about is fair play.

Good teams find a way to win. Even when you aren't playing your best, good teams find a way to win. Even when you've been outplayed and things are going against you, good teams find a way to… Continue

Thumbs UP, Thumbs DOWN : UK vs Tennessee

Kentucky 74

Tennessee 45

How good does that sound? Just say it a few times and let it roll off your tongue - "Kentucky 74....Tennessee 45".

When I was growing up in Southern Indiana, we would call that "getting taken to the woodshed". Translation - that was a major butt-kicking by the Kentucky Wildcats over Tennessee.....or as Crystal Ball likes to say, "The Tennessee Department of Corrections". Is this the UK basketball team that fans have waited all year to see?… Continue

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down: LSU-UK

This is sure turning out to be a special season for the Kentucky Wildcats. As John Calipari likes to say, "We won another Super Bowl!" He's right! Any win on the road in the SEC is a good win, but to go on someone's home floor with their biggest crowd of the season on hand and just embarrass them is not an everyday occurence in this conference.

THUMBS UP…

DeAndre is De-spark

A couple of weeks ago, I'm not so sure anyone thought that DeAndre Liggins was going to be able to provide any help to this UK basketball team. However, Deandre Liggins was THE ONLY player who did anything off the bench in Kentucky's win over Georgia. He was the difference in the game. He came off the bench to score 6 points, get 3 steals, grab 1 rebound, and take a charge in only 14 minutes of play. He played great, hard-nosed defense, and the tough lay up that he made came at a crucial time… Continue

2007 vs. 2009 - Which Class Meant More to UK?

A great topic was brought up during a recent sportstalk radio show in Lexington. Larry Vaught, Mark Buerger and I began the discussion of which recent senior class of UK football players was more important to the program - the 2007 class or 2009 class?

On the outset you might think that the 2007 class of Jacob Tamme, Andre Woodson, Wesley Woodyard, Rafael Little, Keenan Burton and company would easily rate as a better class. This group of seniors is credited with bringing Kentucky… Continue

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down: Indiana

This was really Kentucky’s first true road game of the season – playing on an opponent’s home court. It was also Kentucky’s third game in eight days and all three games were against programs that are generally considered to be among the top 10 in history – North Carolina, Connecticut, and Indiana. John Calipari likes to say that his Cats should be 4-4, or 4-5, or 5-5, but fact is fact – the Cats are still perfect at 10-0.

Thumbs Up

A UK "Pick-Me-Up"

I can't even pretend that I know what it feels like to be a UK football player right now. I can't even act like I know the pain and disappointment the Cats feel right now after losing 30-24 to Tennessee in overtime. None of us really know.

But I do know this - life goes on.

It's not like this UK football team will never get to play another game. They've got their fourth straight bowl win to look forward to.

It's not like this UK football program will never get to play Tennessee… Continue

Patting Papaw Brooks on the Back

Jerry Claiborne couldn't do it.

Bill Curry couldn't do it.

Hal Mumme and Guy Morriss couldn't do it.

Once again Rich "Papaw" Brooks has added another "first" on his ever-growing long list of "firsts" by winning AT Georgia 34-27.

WOW!

Time for me to eat a little crow. I boldly predicted that not only would Georgia beat Kentucky, but that the Bulldogs would have little problem covering the 10-point spread. What an idiot! I was wrong. I am glad to admit that I was… Continue

Was beating Vanderbilt the biggest win of Rich Brooks' UK career?

Hear me out on this.

Sure...beating LSU when they were ranked #1 in the country two years ago was huge.

And beating Louisville earlier that season when they were ranked in the top 10 was big as well.

Three bowl victories are also enormous accomplishments for this UK football program.

Even the road win at Auburn this season was right up there at the top of the list, but I dare to argue that UK's recent win over Vanderbilt may be the biggest win of Rick Brooks UK coaching… Continue

How could a 23 point win feel like a loss?

I walked out of Commonwealth Stadium almost feeling like Kentucky had lost to Louisiana Monroe - not beating them by 23 points. How could a 23 point victory feel like a loss?

I'll tell you why - Kentucky got out-played and out-coached by a team that would go winless in the SEC year after year after year.

The Warhawks showed more heart. The Warhawks looked better on offense. The Warhawks converted 3rd and long time after time after time while Kentucky had trouble all game converted on… Continue

WHAT IF??? Kentucky 26 South Carolina 28

What if Mike Hartline hadn't gotten hurt?

What if Ryan Tydlacka didn't have a 5 yard punt?

What if TC Drake caught a sure touchdown pass?

What if the Cats could beat South Carolina just once this decade?

What if UK put the ball in Randall Cobb's hands on the 2-point coversion?

What if Trevard Lindley wasn't hurt?

What if UK kicked the field goal instead of trying the fake that didn't work?

What if Randall Cobb caught a sure touchdown pass?

What if the… Continue

Hartline? Fidler? Newton? Mossakowski?

After UK's 38-20 loss to third ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, Rich Brooks was asked specifically about his starting quarterback, Mike Hartline. Brooks said that Hartline was basically "a work in progress". He admitted that Hartline didn't play "as well as we would have liked, but he's our best option right now."

Granted Hartline made some mistakes against Alabama. His first interception was horrible - a very bad decision. However, I would like to point out that it is going to be… Continue

Gators "Blue" after UK win

I just got out of the Florida locker room. It was a very somber locker room. The number one ranked Gators had just beaten Kentucky convincingly 41-7, but it feeled as though Florida had lost the game. The reason was obvious - Tim Tebow's injury.

Regardless of how you feel about Tim Tebow, I think everyone agrees that you never want to see a player get hurt. The hit from Taylor Windham was a clean hit. It wasn't malicious, but a head injury is always reason for… Continue
