63 Yard Field Goal Is Awesome!!!!

  • Rating: No Rating
The guy that holds a 63 yard field goal is Tom Dempsey. He had a half right foot that he kicked with. His right arm was about 2/3's the length of a normal arm. He had no right hand. He played for 2 or 3 teams that I know of. Rams, Saints and the Eagles are all that I can think of, however there may be more. He had a special shoe that he wore that was flat across the front. I think he was playing for the Saints when he kicked the field goal. However back then the goal post were on the zero yard line, so 63 yards was 63 yards. In the 70's they moved the goal post back to the end of the end-zone due to injuries of the post. So a 63 yard field today would be something very special with the up-rights being a little farther back. I think this is all correct, if not, any and all may correct it.

Additionally, field goals are still measured from the hold to the goal post. So a 60 yard field goal still went 60 yards. Like you said, goal posts used to be along the front plane of the end-zone. Now they've been moved to the back plane. Before the posts were moved, if you had the ball on the 50, you were kicking a fifty yard field goal. Now, when a field goal is attempted, you can add about 17 yards to the ball spot to figure out how long it was (10 yards to back of the end-zone, seven yards behind the LOS for the hold spot).

Dempsey shares the record with Jason Elam. I believe he kicked his 63 yarder in 1998 when he was kicking for Elway's Broncos.
