CATS - BY THE NUMBERS: WHO IS THE VERY BEST?

  • Rating: No Rating
In sports one of the highest honors a player can recieve is to have his number retired, never to be used again. In Chicago there will be no more #23 for the Bulls, no #3 in New York for the Yankees, or #13 in Miami for the Dolphins. Just mentioning these sacred numbers and people will know exactly who is being discussed.

But what about at UK? Here at the University of Kentucky they don't retire the numbers, but the jersey's of the greats who wear them. But what if the they did retire the numbers? Who would be the very best? Would #24 be Mashburn or Walker? Would #10 be Dampier, Minniefield, or Bogans?

We here at KSN have often wondered who the very best were, so we have come up with:

CATS BY THE NUMBERS: WHO IS THE VERY BEST ?

Each day over the next few weeks we will pick a new jersey number and give you a chance to vote on who is the very best at that number.
First up: #00

Thanks for the information, Rob. So now what do we do to get the ball rolling? He certainly deserves the honor in my estimation.

Not one of those guys could be Delk's Waterby!

I agree that it should just be a matter of time before Delk has his jersey hanging in the rafters. Hopefully with him being a part of the coaching staff now this will get done.

I have to go with Delk too. Because the 1996 team was so good, how good a year Delk had that year often gets overlooked, imo. He was SEC player of the year and an All-American that year. The team did not have a great game in the championship against Syracuse but Delk really came through that night. I'm sure he will get his jersey retired.

It was #00 Chiles I wanted to vote for, but Kirk Chiles a walk-on in Coach Rupp's last year. However, Tony Delk gets my vote of these and was one of my favorite players at UK.

Ah yes here it is from the UK Athletics site:

"There is a five-year waiting period - after leaving UK - to be eligible for inclusion into the Hall of Fame, and a 10-year waiting period to have a jersey retired. An individual must be a member of the Hall of Fame to be eligible for jersey retirement. "

Delk went into the Hall of Fame last year and his 10 yrs was up 3 years ago so he is eligible for induction at any time.

I would think so... Isn't there some sort of new requirement now? I know it used to be you had to graduate but that changed with the induction of Jamal Mashburn. I think now you have to been to be in the Hall of Fame and been away for a certain # of years

Let's start a petition to get that jersey retired. Tony Delk was one of our best both on and off the court!
