In sports one of the highest honors a player can recieve is to have his number retired, never to be used again. In Chicago there will be no more #23 for the Bulls, no #3 in New York for the Yankees, or #13 in Miami for the Dolphins. Just mentioning these sacred numbers and people will know exactly who is being discussed.
But what about at UK? Here at the University of Kentucky they don't retire the numbers, but the jersey's of the greats who wear them. But what if the they did retire the numbers? Who would be the very best? Would #24 be Mashburn or Walker? Would #10 be Dampier, Minniefield, or Bogans?
Yes, Groza was fantastic and probably was the best #15 so far but...I just had to vote for Shep. Loved that kid. Ed Davender was another good one and a favorite of my daughter. One time when we were privileged to attend a closed practice of the Cats, we were taking pictures afterwards. Davender sat by my daughter on a step for a picture and his sweaty arm touched hers. She announced to us later that she was never again going to wash her arm! She was every bit of about 10 years old at the time. Nevertheless, it's Shep for me.
