CATS - BY THE NUMBERS: WHO IS THE VERY BEST? - #2

  • Rating: No Rating
In sports one of the highest honors a player can recieve is to have his number retired, never to be used again. In Chicago there will be no more #23 for the Bulls, no #3 in New York for the Yankees, or #13 in Miami for the Dolphins. Just mentioning these sacred numbers and people will know exactly who is being discussed.

But what about at UK? Here at the University of Kentucky they don't retire the numbers, but the jersey's of the greats who wear them. But what if the they did retire the numbers? Who would be the very best? Would #24 be Mashburn or Walker? Would #10 be Dampier, Minniefield, or Bogans?

We here at KSN have often wondered who the very best were, so we have come up with:

#00: Tony Delk
#1: Cliff Hawkins

CATS BY THE NUMBERS: WHO IS THE VERY BEST ?

Each day over the next few weeks we will pick a new jersey number and give you a chance to vote on who is the very best at that number.

Next Up: #2

I'm with you, kyfan32. I have heard of some of the older players and have watched every game I could from the 70's on but I still have to go with Ravi.

I am not sure I understand this poll, I can't vote for a player I have never heard of or seen, therefore I will go with Ravi. I know there are stats but as you all know from players you have seen there are things that stats don't follow. Think of Chuck Hayes, best player on many a court but not according to a stat line. Moss was a work horse and a hustler.

Nice work Nathan. I've been convinced. I was going to vote Moss, but I think Davis has better stats now. I do agree that Ravi was a fun player to watch. He always looked excited and looked like he was having fun.

Wanted to vote for Ravi but I had to go with Bill Davis based upon what Nathan wrote. Sounds like he was a pretty important player in building the UK tradition.

I always appreciate Moss, however. My favorite Ravi moment was when he hit a big three late in the game of the comeback win over UofL in 2004-2005 season. I remember how pumped up he was and firing up his teammates. I also remember his coming out party against UNC in beating them at Rupp in the 2003-2004 season.

On first thought, Ravi gets the nod because of his incessant hustle and team first attitude. He was a walk on from Kentucky that had limited ability but a huge heart. He's a guy that everybody loved because of the way he played.

Bill Davis was a two-time All-SEC and two-time All-SEC Tournament. He was also a third team All-American in '33-'34. He only played two seasons and scored 299 points. He left school after his junior year because of an illness to his mother. He was on the first SEC Championship team under Adolph Rupp as well as the first undefeated team under the Baron.

My vote goes to Davis.

My information comes from Jon Scott's UK web site: http://bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/statistics.html
