In sports one of the highest honors a player can recieve is to have his number retired, never to be used again. In Chicago there will be no more #23 for the Bulls, no #3 in New York for the Yankees, or #13 in Miami for the Dolphins. Just mentioning these sacred numbers and people will know exactly who is being discussed.
But what about at UK? Here at the University of Kentucky they don't retire the numbers, but the jersey's of the greats who wear them. But what if the they did retire the numbers? Who would be the very best? Would #24 be Mashburn or Walker? Would #10 be Dampier, Minniefield, or Bogans?
I love Winston, but Epps gets my vote. Not flashy, but maybe the most under control cool level headed floor generals that I have seen. He never done anything to hurt you, and wasn't afraid of the big shots. Ala two ft's against Arkansas in epic overtime battle for SEC tourney title, and last sec. 3 against Arizona to force overtimme in 97' final. Best performence probably came in 96' tourney when he only commited 2 or 3 turnovers for the whole tournament in way to lead us to title. I can;t remeber exact number of turnovers, but it was really low.
Adolph Rupp called Edwards one of the greatest players he ever coached. Bennett, Epps, Shidler and Steele were nice players but not in the same league with Edwards.
I was going to vote for Bennett until I read CDogg's link on Edwards! I didn't realize all of that about Edwards. He left UK after his first varsity year to turn pro in the 1930's. Leroy Edwards from Jon Scott's Big Blue History
I wanted to vote for the "others" in this one just for fun, but even though Jay Shilder was one of my favorite players growing up, I had to pick Bennett.
Leroy Edwards should win this vote going away. He was one of the first dominating centers (at 6'5") and he helped usher in the three second rule. Here is a link:
