In sports one of the highest honors a player can recieve is to have his number retired, never to be used again. In Chicago there will be no more #23 for the Bulls, no #3 in New York for the Yankees, or #13 in Miami for the Dolphins. Just mentioning these sacred numbers and people will know exactly who is being discussed.
But what about at UK? Here at the University of Kentucky they don't retire the numbers, but the jersey's of the greats who wear them. But what if the they did retire the numbers? Who would be the very best? Would #24 be Mashburn or Walker? Would #10 be Dampier, Minniefield, or Bogans?
My vote went to the good ole boy from the hills, Ritchie Farmer. Can't help but to love Ritchie. Though Dr. Dunk James Lee catches my eye. Hord did have a tremendous jr. year. What about that freshmen year Prickett had? Like to seen what someone like Cal could have done with a Joe Crawford for 4 years. We might be changing our votes.
I went with James Lee. He is also an all time favorite for me.
This was a tough one, however. Hord had a great junior year that a lot of people forget about. With Bowie injured, Hord was UK's go-to player. He was All-SEC that year and that was one of the best years in history for SEC basketball. He had a buzzer beater shot on the road to beat Auburn and Charles Barkley, who had been thrown out of the game for going after Charles Hurt. Yet, he had a very disappointing senior year and was heavily criticized by then Herald-Leader writer Mark Bradley, who is now with the Atlanta Consitution. Bradley built him up and then tore him down.
Crawford was probably the best player of the bunch. He was pretty solid for 3 years and carried UK at times during his senior season. Still, Lee was such a big part of 4 great seasons that he had to get my vote. It would have been interesting to see how great he would have been if he had to carry a team like Crawford did his senior year.
I like several of the #32's. #32 was actually my number. As far as potential, I think Joe may have had the most. I likewise remember James Lee and how much he meant to the team. Derrick Hord was a good one and everybody that I have ever talked to in the Bluegrass loved Ritchie Farmer. It has been said that he would win if he ran for governor. I love these polls. They're a lot of fun. As usual though I had a hard time choosing on this one.
I remember watching James Lee check into a UK game. Everyone in the gym knew what was about to happen. They would throw him the ball on the baseline and he would go to the basket and get fouled or dunk the ball. There was nothing the opposition could do about it. He is one of my all time favorites.
