In sports one of the highest honors a player can recieve is to have his number retired, never to be used again. In Chicago there will be no more #23 for the Bulls, no #3 in New York for the Yankees, or #13 in Miami for the Dolphins. Just mentioning these sacred numbers and people will know exactly who is being discussed.
But what about at UK? Here at the University of Kentucky they don't retire the numbers, but the jersey's of the greats who wear them. But what if the they did retire the numbers? Who would be the very best? Would #24 be Mashburn or Walker? Would #10 be Dampier, Minniefield, or Bogans?
Mr. Issel it is! Cotton Nash was also a great one. Along with lots of other people, one of my personal favorites was Chuck Hayes. There has probably never been a Wildcat player who was not a native Kentuckian that loved Kentucky and Kentucky basketball more than Chuck Hayes. In my opinion, he exemplified the ideal Kentucky basketball player. I loved to watch him in action. You always knew what to expect. 100% everytime he stepped on the court. Even though there have been several great players to wear the jersey, the best #44 was Dan Issel.
Hey, there is no doubt who this pick is. But have to give big ups to Cotton Nash, a great career at UK. Next even though the pure basketball talent is not foung here like it is with Nash and Issel but you can't not go without giving a salute to the one player who's effort, attitude, and pure love for playing for Kentucky in Chuck Hayes. Will always remain a fan fav. My vote like basically everyone elses goes to Issel. His numbers are incredible. People forget that this was done in 3 yrs. becuase freshman was not allowed to play on the Varsity squad then. Just imagine what the "Horse's" numbers might have looked like then. I do know this from prior experience of listening to Dan talk in past interviews, he would trade all those records for a NCAA title! We has fans love him no less, and I hope he knows that!
It is a tribute to how good Issell was at UK. When you see all the really good players who wore 44 and then realize that determining the best is pretty much a no brainer.
