Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - Florida Edition

Thumbs Up:

Running backs - Raymond Sanders actually broke a tackle! Ladies and Gentleman right that one down on the calendar. Sanders and George played good in the 1st half (and really that's all I'm looking at since the coaching staff gave up at halftime). What impressed me even more was that Florida was putting 9 in the box and the Cats still had their best rushing game of the year.

Offensive line - Opened up holes for the running backs when every one in the entire world knew that was exactly what Kentucky was going to do.

Martavius Neloms- Actually played prety good coverage for a change. Had a knock down and a pick in the 1st and then the UF QB just completely quit looking his way. Neloms has been knocked a lot but he played solid Saturday

Punt Team- Yeah! No punts blocked vs. Florida for the first time in 315 years.

ESPN Announcers- Love that you kept calling out Joker and staff for their questionable playcalling and continued use of Morgan Newton.

Wide Receivers - Managed to get open and create separation against Florida DB's. Of course it was only to watch the ball sail overhead, or at their feet, or behind them.

Thumbs Down:

Morgan Newton- It might have been the worst QB play I've ever seen. Definitely the worst at UK and that list includes such greats as: Jeff Speedy, Antonio O'Ferral, Pookie Jones, Freddie Maggard, Chuck Broughton, Billy Jack Haskins, Matt Hobbie and etc... Not going to pile on too much because the coaches are just as much at fault. More of a fail than a thumbs down. Keep in mind as bad as numbers were, he was worse at South Carolina last year: 17 pass yards

Joker Phillips and Randy Sanders- Where to start here.... First, you knew Smith couldn't play but instead of sandbagging and changing the offense like you did against UT last year; you sandbag and lose any advantage by puting Newton in the same pass happy offense, an offense he absolutely can't play. YOU HAD ALL WEEK TO FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS. Then instead of seeing he can't play that way you kept running it. Then you claim you couldn't play Whitlow because he wasn't ready, yet he has been practicing as the #2 while Newton has been practicing H-back all season, so he'd actually had more practice time. Again these are the coaching staff's words, as no one really knows what is going on in practice. Former J-P announcers are even  calling you out for your incompetence. Then you give up on your team at halftime as instead of going with Whitlow finally, you release that your QB with a  -49 QB rating couldn't complete a pass so we are just going to run it up the middle everyplay, run clock and hope UK fans notice we kept it under 50. I was worried this staff might lose players as the players would give up as the fails piled up; didn't realize the staff would do so first.

Then there is the issue of sandbagging. As a single event I've got no problem with i, it's what coaches do. Taken as a part of the whole and it is a further example of the trust issue many fans have with this staff. In 2011 it was that the offensive line was the best in SEC, strength of this team; Morgan Newton has improved so much "You won't even recognize him" and then FALSE. we got terrible o-line play and bad Morgan Newton. In 2012 it was: D-line is the strength of this team and close qb competition between Newton and Smith.FALSE. All last week it was Smith was fine, Smith was 100% and then out of the blue we get that. Which would be okay if you actually tricked Florida but instead you just screwed the fans. This staff has trouble with the truth.

Joker Phillips and Randy Sanders- They failed so badly they deserve a 2nd thumbs down.

Craig McIntosh- Swear I thought I heard someone say bring back Lones Seiber... You also cost my fantasy game with those misses.

In addition to Neloms, it seemed like the DBs on a whole played better.  There were many times Florida's QB couldn't find a receiver open.  Also, thought Bud Dupree lived up to his hype and played his best game of the year.

What is bad about Craig McIntosh is he is just barely missing.  Still think he's a good kicker but he has to start kicking in the middle and leaving no doubt.

Good stuff as always Rob. Anyone want to wager on who will have more people in two weeks, UK vs. MSU or opening day at Keeneland.
