"Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down" - Rebels Edition

  • Rating: No Rating
Thumbs Up:

Ryan Tydlacka - 73 yards is ridiculous for a punt. Had a strong leg all day.

The Grove - Lived every bit up to its hype. Great fans, great food, great setup. Count this Wildcat fan as jealous

Craig McIntosh -Anytime the Cats go perfect for FG's in a game this year, that has to be recognized. Also came in to bailout out Mansour who couldn't keep the ball in the field.

Mike Hartline - A horrid interception that has to stop, but other than that he probably had his best day as a UK QB. He had some nice runs in the clutch and was able to make some plays that avoided sacks.

Thumbs Down:

Turnovers - Can't turn the ball over 3 times and expect to win. The INT was inexcusable and just flat awful, but a product of running the same play over and over. Even sadder that it is Ole Miss' only INT all season. The Cobb fumble was bad because it was caused by another UK player, Matthews fumble well, I'm not sure anyone in the SEC would have held onto that ball there, so I can't be too mad at that. But you gotta cause turnovers of your own if your are losing balls like that.

Red Zone defense - Do we even field one?

Linebackers - See previous question...

Randall Cobb - The yardage will say otherwise, (and most of that was on punt and kick returns where he definitely deserves a big thumbs up) but Randall was off most of the game. He short armed the wide open early pass out of the Wildcat that would have probably led to a score. Fumbles out of the Wildcat and drops a couple of easy grabs.

Refs- They didn't cost us the game but man where they pathetic. Still wondering what they were reviewing on the Randall Cobb touchdown? Also not sure how you get a personal foul for late hit when you hit them while they are still in bounds. Which they flagged Bailey for when he hit the Ole Miss QB. As bad as they were, there were worse....

Timekeeper - The Cats should have had atleast 2 more minutes to play with at the end. At both the end of the 1st half and end of the game, the clock would routinely run 2-3 seconds after the ref had signaled the end of the play. (So much that all UK fans were going nuts in the section as the play would end we would all have enough time to look up at the 1 scoreboard and see another 1-2 seconds run off) Then late in the 4th the Cats are trying to cut it to 7 and get close to the 1st down, the Cats get the 1st down but the clock never stops running. So :17 tick off. Bad refs are bad refs but this ladies and gentleman is cheating and the SEC needs to do something about it.

Hands team- I realize that Trevathan is there to hit the players to knock the ball loose, but the coaching staff looks really stupid when they have a guy with a club on his hand out there for onside kicks, and it cost them this time.

Joker Phillips - Team is still way to undisciplined and was unmotivated especially in the 2nd half. Time to quit overthinking and just go out and play. Especially on kickoffs! Just kick it deep.

Now for the other issues.... instead of re-writing I thought I'd just repost last weeks major problems and see if we addressed any of them in anyway

- Defense gameplan - putrid, a giant turd... that's the best I can say. Same ole story, huge runs up the middle, no pressure on 3rd and long, no defense against the wildcat. I'd say it was better than a turd, but not much and I think we did get pressure on 3rd and long once. But the rest is pretty much the same.

- Steve Brown - It's time to go. 4 seasons... 40 games into your tenure as D-coordinator and you still have no clue how to defense a spread offense. Your LB's can't cover WR's, yet you insist man coverage instead of zone. You refuse to attack and your game plan in general is awful and your team looks ill-prepared. When asked you say "guys were out of position" or "need better talent". Sorry bud, that doesn't fly after 40 games, if they are still out of position that's coaching, and it's hard to claim lack of talent when 5 of your former guys are playing in NFL games today. I've seen coaches with a lot less do a lot more. Worse, is that you continue to stick with a failing system. That's just arrogance and stupidity and there is no need for that here. Time is up, move on. Check and Check! I'd also add insanity to this list as we continue to do the same things expecting a different result. Any coach in America would have loaded the box and forced Ole Miss to throw, but not ole good doctor Brown, heck he didn't even do it on the last play.

- Randy Sanders - Mr. Sanders please introduce yourself and your QB to Chris Matthews. Then look at a height chart. Notice Mr. Matthews is 6+ inches taller than most DB's including those on the Gators. Notice it was the one position UF could not defend on you. Now throw to Mr. Matthews and repeat, and repeat and repeat. Florida shutdown Cobb but couldn't cover Matthews. Instead of exploiting it ( a la Burton for UF or Alshon Jeffery for USC Jr. last year); our offense keeps trying to dink and dunk to Cobb and King. As has been every game this year, the deep jump ball or fade to Matthews was there anytime we wanted it. Apparently, we didn't want it. Some changes here. We did throw to Matthews more, but it wasn't the deep routes and fades (we saved those for emergencies and wow they worked who would have thought). No, we took our slow, hands, deep WR and threw slants and speed routes to him. Cmon guys, use your personnel correctly. Again you have to get rid of the dink and dunk and stretch the field.

-3rd downs - This has got to change. You have to throw past the sticks. End of story. No more routes short of the marker. I can only laugh as I type this otherwise I will cry... We apparently decided this strategy worked so well we should try it on 4th down as well. Newsflash a incomplete pass 10 yds down field is worth just as much as a 3 yard pass on 4th and 4... Nothing.

-Stupid penalties - They only think different from the Brooks era. Way, way, way, way too many stupid penalties. We may hold the record for penalties for lining up in the neutral zone. Pretty sad to get whistled for offsides when you didn't even jump; you're just so stupid you lined up that way. Also sad to get whistled for offsides on a kickoff and continually kick the ball out bounds.

I know it was lazy, but retyping all of our stupidity over again because we continue to do it would have angered me way to much. Sanity is the key.

The Bailey penalty was pathetic. The Ole Miss player still had both feet in bounds when Bailey hit him. How does the ref make that call?

I have to disagree on Cobb. He made some great catches too for points. He had long returns. The fumble was bad but was partly due to the Ole Miss DT blowing up the play. Ole Miss has 4 senior DTs and two of them were 5 star recruits in 2006.
