Kentucky entered Saturday's match-up against Arkansas looking to take over the top spot in the polls as the only undefeated team left in the country. After the most complete game of the season, the Cats left no doubt who the best team is, moving to 19-0 with a 101-70 victory over the Razorbacks.
Thumbs Up
Quick Start- One worry going into this game could have been a slow start since the Cats had a week off after winning at Auburn. That clearly wasn't the case. The starting five came out of the gate with a great focus and quickly got out to a 10-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Ball Movement- The first note I took during this game was about the wonderful ball movement on the first possession. The ball started at the top of the key with Patrick Patterson. He hit DeMarcus Cousins on the post, who found Eric Bledsoe on the wing. He passed to Patterson on the baseline for the jumper. The key to the play was Cousins passing the ball out of the post, something he didn't do earlier in the season. His ability to find the open man after the defense doubles down on him makes the Cats a much more efficient half-court offensive team.
DeMarcus Cousins- It seems like every game Cousins shows us a different move, and they are all spectacular. Cousins finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds in only 17 minutes of action. The spin along the baseline for the dunk is something very few big men can do, but it was his drive down the lane for the layup that impressed me the most. Plus, we knew he was tough, but Cousins had a couple of teeth busted up early in the game, and still put up those numbers.
DeAndre Liggins- The whole team was getting on the floor, hustling, and creating opportunities, but Liggins took it to a new level when he entered the game. In one possession, he dove for a loose ball at mid-court, got back to poke the ball away at the free throw line, then dove on the ball in the paint to call the timeout and preserve the ball for the Cats. That one play by Liggins exemplifies the effort put forth by the Cats today. He also stepped up and knocked down a three.
Darius Miller- The sophomore from Maysville is the least heralded player of the five Kentucky starters, but he stepped up today to lead the Cats with 18 points. He also had five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Miller was 4-6 from the 3-point line, and showed how easily he can get into the lane and score with the floater, something I believe Coach Calipari wants to see more of.
Balanced Scoring- Kentucky put up 101 points, yet no one scored over 18. In addition to Miller's 18 and Cousins' 16, John Wall had 16, Bledsoe finished with 10, and Patterson only had 9 points. The bench for Kentucky put in 32 points, led by six from Darnell Dodson, Daniel Orton, and birthday-boy Perry Stevenson.
Rebounding- Kentucky's rebounding margin in all games averages out to a 9.8 difference. Today the Cats out-rebounded Arkansas 54 to 33. Cousins led the way with 14, Patterson and Bledsoe had seven, and Orton and Ramon Harris had five.
Thumbs Down
I made an honest effort to come up with something I could break down and pick on, but it's hard to find something wrong with a 31 point conference win.
Kentucky will almost assuredly move to number one when the new polls come out on Monday. They face a tough test on Tuesday when they travel to South Carolina, followed by two home games against Vanderbilt and Mississippi. It will be difficult to get through this upcoming stretch without a loss, but the Cats are showing improvement every game, and nothing should be a surprise anymore.
